Could Centralizing Volunteer Fire & Rescue At One Fire Hall Reduce Costs To Taxpayers?
There is no denying the importance of fire and rescue in our town. Sooner or later we all will be dialing 911 in a time of need. While both parties claim they will support the Volunteer Fire Companies, few details are offered on how they will accomplish this goal.
The town’s Volunteer Fire Companies are a protected fiefdom. No candidate for Evans Town Board has ever challenged if or how services could be delivered more efficiently or at a lower cost for the same service level.
At the risk of getting “cancelled”, here is an idea to consider.
Located behind the town hall is a privately owned ambulance service. Town officials are very with the happy with the service provided from a centralized location.
The town and village have 5 fire halls. What if volunteer fire and rescue services were consolidated into one location say at Evans Center? Right off the bat, four fire halls could be sold and put back on the tax rolls. The funds from the sale could be invested in the “one” building to make it state-of-the-art.
Since the fire halls do not open their books to the public, there is no way to estimate cost savings by centralizing services.
Change come hard in Evans. We always keep doing things the same way since that is how we do things here.
One properly funded fire hall just might be a better option than five fire halls that struggle with funding and membership.
